The Story Mountain Writing Activity for Kids

Writing stories together can be a great exercise for little ones to develop storytelling, literacy and writing skills. We love to let kids explore their creativity by coming up with their own stories. Connect storytelling and yoga by asking kids to write stories about their favorite yoga poses. Let's try writing one with Mountain Pose.
Before suggesting the kids write their story, ask them to to plan it first. By planning a story, children put their thoughts in order and then can use that inspiration to write it. To help children to understand the structure of a story, use our Story Mountain template to help plan your story. For younger kids, ask them about each part of the story.
Use the steps below to help kiddos create their very own mountain inspired stories.

1. To inspire your story's plot, use writing prompts.

Write a story about a time you or someone you know was strong like a mountain. This can be a time you or someone you know faced a problem that you solved.

2. Plan your story with our Story Mountain template.

  1. Start with the beginning- introduce your characters and setting of your story. Who is the main character? Where are you, what is the setting?

  2. Then, write the build-up - what is happening in the story? How is this story building up to the problem you are going to face?

  3. The problem/climax - why did you need to be strong and steady like a mountain? What problem were you facing? How did you feel?

  4. The resolution - how did you overcome the problem you faced? Think of the strength of a mountain and how felt when you solved your problem.

  5. Last, the ending - what did you learn from overcoming your problem? Did any characters change?

3. Read your story together and use feedback to edit your story.

Encourage your kids to read the story out loud. Does it flow well? Does it make sense from beginning to end? Give feedback. Let your kids know that constructive criticism is a helpful tool to improve their story.

Growth Mindset Worksheets

1. Stand in Mountain Pose and bring your hands just below
your heart and above your belly button. This spot, known
as the solar plexus, can store energy and power for you. As
you inhale, reach your hands to the Sun and spread out all
your fingers.
2. At the top of the inhale, imagine grabbing from the Sun’s
rays and pulling the energy in.
3. As you exhale, draw your fists toward your solar plexus.
Your elbows will bend and go behind you.
4. When your elbows are back and hands are in front of your
solar plexus, yell, “HA!”
5. Repeat several times. Stop after a maximum of 5
repetitions.

Mountain Pose

Mantra: I stand firm like a mountain. I feel steady and powerful.

How to do mountain pose:

Mountain pose with instructions - illustration of a child next to a mountain
  • Stand with your big toes together or your feet at hip width distance apart, whichever is more comfortable. Imagine you can grow the soles of your feet and toes down into the Earth, which helps you feel steady as a huge mountain at its base.
  • Then, standing up straight but not too rigid and not too soft, just at a gentle attention, let your arms fall by your sides.
  • Turn your palms forward and spread your fingers out.
  • Imagine you can lengthen your spine by lifting the crown of your head a little higher toward the sky right above you. Breathe steadily in and out. Stand firmly in your strength.
    • Does a mountain move when the wind blows?
    • How can you invoke the spirit and strength of the mountain the next time you have difficulty in your life?
    • When forces try to knock you down, will you stand firm like the mountain?
